Portrait of a holy bishop, fine XVII secolo

oil painting on canvas
cm 62,5 x 50

Oil painting on canvas in a non-contemporary gilded wood frame. & nbsp;

Neapolitan School.

This oil painting on canvas represents the stern figure of a bishop saint, to be identified with all probability by Sant'Ambrogio of Milan. The work presents remarkable similarities with the Sant'Ambrogio realized by Mattia Preti between 1670 and 1676, today preserved in the Museo Civico di Taverna (CZ).

Le strette stylistic and compositional affinities with the work of the Calabrian painter direct the attribution of the painting to a skilled follower active at the end of the century.

State of preservation: painting re-lining and restored, with small drops of color at the bottom right and below the book at the bottom left.
