San Luigi Gonzaga, XVIII secolo

oil painting on canvas
cm 56,5 x 45

oil painting on canvas within gilded wood frame.

The painting depicts San Luigi Gonzaga, according to his most widespread iconography, in the act of praying the Crucifix, next to a table on which his distinctive attributes rest: the lily, the skull, the scourge and the princely crown, alluding to the rejection of the lordship of Castiglione delle Stiviere.

The palette pictorial played on dark and brown tones, leaves room for delicate and pleasant lighting effects, in the treatment of the face and in the brilliance of the gold of the crown that shines next to the vanitas.

Conservation status: different color drop points, restored and re-covered canvas.
