Jan Van Dornicke (scuola di)
(1470 - 1527)

Virgin Mary with Child and client, 1520 ca.

oil on board
35.5 x 26.5 cm
The painting, which appeared on the antiques market in the Christie's auction in 1986, was generically ascribed to the Antwerp School.
For a more precise attribution, the references to Jan Van Dornicke (ca. 1470 - ca. 1527), often identified with The Master of 1518, are undoubtedly numerous: first of all the folds of the Virgin's mantle, widely spread in the foreground, a distinctive sign of the artist. The Virgin is shown in the center of the painting, flanked by the figure of the client. She is seated on a chest, an expedient to demonstrate the great skill in the complicated arrangement of the folds of the mantle.
Our artist would show therefore particular consonances with other works by Van Dornicke, particularly evident in the Triptych of the Crucifixion of 1520 (Museu de Arte de São Paulo) but also in many other works that appeared on the antiques market such as The Adoration of the Magi, Lempertz, November 15, 2003, lot n. 1098 or, more recently, Maria Lactans, Hampel, 25 March 2021, lot 563.
The painting is good condition with very few retouching, framed
