Madonna with Child, Bolognese school, first half of the 17th century

oil painting on canvas
123 x 105 cm

The painting denotes strong consonances with the works of Lorenzo Garbieri (1580 - 1654), a Bolognese pupil of the Carraccesca Academy and who, unlike many other artists, never left his hometown. He was always close to Ludovico and, as could be deduced from this canvas (if the attribution was certain), he never abandoned the dark and gloomy colors. From the "atrous and austere" language, as defined by Malvasia in 1678, Garbieri also reveals influences borrowed from another pupil of the Carraccis, Sisto Badalocchio (1585 - 1647), who may have inspired productions similar to the one presented here.

The work is relined. Slight ancient repaintings on the face of the Madonna and Child. Light touches scattered across the surface. Thin vertical scratch at the bottom right
