Paolo De Matteis (bottega di)
(1662 - 1728)

Achilles discovered by Ulysses among Lycomedes' daughters in Skyros, late 17th century

Oil painting on canvas
102 x 154 cm
The painting probably represents the well-known episode taken from the Achilleide of Stazio. The work shows strong similarities with the works of De Matteis, in particular reference is made to those completed after his stay in Rome in which the classicism of Poussin and Mola becomes more evident. The painting, relined, shows, on the whole, a very good state of conservation; small touches of repainting are scattered over the entire pictorial surface, without however compromising its quality.
